The history of the Old Port Souvenir Center dates back to the 1890s. Captain Stylianos Moraris, a native of the famous island of Symi near Rhodes, began fishing for sponges across the Mediterranean Sea with his 25-meter boat. Sponge fishing became a cherished family tradition, passed down from father to son. After World War II, his son, Gregoris, moved to Famagusta, Cyprus, where he continued harvesting and processing sponges. The tradition then passed to his grandson, Andreas, who, in 1974, relocated to Limassol with his family as a refugee. There, Andreas expanded the business by building a factory in the town’s industrial area, specialising in the bleaching and packaging of sea sponges and natural loofah products. Over time, the company diversified, adding olive oil and essential oil soap production while maintaining its core focus on natural sponges and loofah.

When visiting Cyprus, be sure to stop by the Old Port Sea Sponges Exhibition Center in Limassol. There, you can select your own sponge or loofah and explore their extensive range of olive oil and Dead Sea cosmetics for skin and body care.
